Beginning as an independent study in Fall 2023 under Dr. Taylor McKee (Assistant Professor, Brock University), I used my technical skills to promote Indigenous hockey with goals of increased hockey player exposure and new tools for player development. I have completed the following projects:
This map was created through Google My Maps using data that was inputted manually into a Google Sheets database regarding High-Level Indigenous Hockey Players. Using the sidebar, there are two displays: "NAHC Players (Team)", and "NAHC + High-Level Hockey". Once you choose a display, you can add a detail like "Most Recent NAHC", "Home Population (Range)", "Position" or "Indigenous Background". Each icon has information on the player from that location. This list will be ever-growing, likely updated yearly, and the map will be offered to other websites to promote High-Level Indigenous Hockey Players in Canada. The raw data collection would not have been possible without Dr. Taylor McKee's SPMA 3P05 student volunteers.
Above is the Database as of March 30th, 2023. If the database is missing a player with an Indigenous Background who plays Junior or Professional Hockey or played at a National Aboriginal Hockey Championship (NAHC), or if any information is incorrect, please send an email with a link that can serve as evidence for the change.
The tools below were created in combination with tracking pages focused on individual statistics such as Shot Location, Turnovers, Faceoffs, and more for the 2023 National Aboriginal Hockey Championship (NAHC) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The tools below are free to use as a starting point for meaningful analytics work in hockey.
